The world’s third longest suspension bridge, a total of five miles, the Mackinac Bridge of Michigan opened to traffic in November of 1957. Prior to it’s conception, and completion, or family would make frequent trips aboard the auto ferry that would connect travelers between Michigan’s two peninsulas. I can still remember the thrill, and a bit of fear as we would stand on deck making the journey across the waters of our great lakes Michigan and Huron. Once across, we would continue another three hundred plus miles to the beautiful Copper Country, and cities of Houghton and Hancock, where I still have family to this day.
While I have taken many photos of the bridge myself, I chose to use the scene depicted in this original oil painting of The Mighty Mac, courtesy of Dawn Laferty. I loved that she had captured the lone seagull perched on a rock along the Lake Michigan shoreline, overlooking this massive structure.
